The Importance of Speed

OBJECTIVES

Develop the players' understanding of how to attack in a 2 v 1 situation.

SET UP

Players divided into two teams of 4 and stand at either end of a 20x30 box.
The defender starts with the ball and plays a long pass into either of the two attackers. Once the attackers receive the ball their objective is to cross the end of the box the defender has come from. The defender tries to either win possession or knock the ball out of play. When the play ends, the next defender in red repeats the process with the next two blue attackers in sequence. Once the blues have all had a chance to attack, the roles reverse and the session is repeated.

COACHING POINTS

The emphasis is on the attackers therefore you should only focus your coaching points on the players in possession.
When the first attacker receives the ball they should look to take a good first touch of the ball by cushioning it in front of their feet. Quickly they should focus on committing the defender whilst the second attacker creates space by running wide but not ahead of the ball. Once the defender is close the first attacker must decide either to play a pass to the supporting attacker or use disguise to beat the defender and accelerate forward to the goal line. In order to prevent the defender from gaining ground the attacker can cut back across the path of the defender forcing the player to hesitate to avoid a collision.

How To: Soccer Attacking in a 2v1 Formation

OBJECTIVES

To create space for strikers to develop a goal scoring opportunity.

SET UP

4 squares marked out with 9 cones 5 yards outside the penalty area. Squares are 8 yards x 8 yards.
Players A and B (midfielders) play short sharp passes to each other 4 or 5 times. When ready, Player A takes a touch to open their body and face the goal. When given this visual signal, Player C (Striker) demands the ball and moves towards Player A. Player A plays a firm pass which is directed at the path of Player C but is intended for Player D. Once the pass goes passed Player C the player spins into the path of the pass and towards Player D. Player D is positioned in the diagonally opposite box and receives and cushions a pass for Player C. Player D after cushioning the pass opens out his body facing Player C and runs backwards to receive the pass back from Player C and then shoots at the target.

Players should work on the timing of the passes and the runs to ensure that it all happens eventually with one touch.

Players should rotate roles in being midfielders and strikers to gain an understanding of the importance of each position.

COACHING POINTS

Players need to work on the strength of the pass from midfield to ensure it has enough weight to go passed the first striker and into the feet of the second striker.

The first striker needs to ensure that they do not move towards the ball too early and so must look for a visual indication that the midfielder is about to release a pass.

The second striker needs to retain the length in the game and needs to remain in a diagonally opposite position from the midfielder and the first striker.

The pass from second striker to first striker needs to be cushioned so that the first striker can play it back first time.

The shot at goal needs to be on target and composed.

Twin Strikers

OBJECTIVES

The session focuses on improving the anticipation and movement between strikers to create goal scoring opportunities.

SET UP

4 boxes outside the penalty area measuring 15 yds X 22 yds.

2 strikers (Players C and D) have starting positions in diagonally opposite boxes with two feeder players (Players A and B) positioned around halfway. This set up should simulate the area on the pitch where the scenario would normally develop.

The drill begins with the two feeders playing short, sharp passes to each other whilst the two strikers await a visual signal. Once the feeder who will eventually pass it turns to face the strikers the striker on the side of the feeder moves into the box closest to receive the ball. At this stage the other striker should be positioned diagonally opposite.

The first striker receives the ball and dribbles at pace diagonally towards the second striker. The second striker then moves towards the first striker and arcs their run to cut across and wide of the player dribbling. The first striker then plays into the path of the second striker who shoots at the target.

The drill should be repeated until the timing of the passes and the runs are perfected and smooth.

COACHING POINTS

The strikers must make their first move when the feeder is ready to play.

The feeders should play a light weight of pass to the first striker.

The first striker must collect with a first touch that moves the ball out from their feet.

The second striker then must time the run and open the body to receive the pass.

Once the second striker has received they must quickly execute an accurate shot at the target.

Striker Combination Play 1

Objectives

We want to prepare our players the best way possible for the rigours of the season ahead but also to make the process as enjoyable as possible so that the players perform in a positive way.

We want the players to gain both anaerobic and aerobic levels of fitness as well as working technically and tactically.

Setup

Each session should include all the dynamic warm up routines each routine being repeated 10 times per player or 5 mins in length. The warm up phase should last approximately 35 minutes.

The drills should last no longer than 15 mins each.

The game should last about 20 minutes.

Coaching points

Coaches should demand technical quality within all sections as well as asking players to put in a strong effort.

3v1 Possession

In this one-on-one attacking soccer drill, two soccer players race for a loose soccer ball. The winner of the possession goes on offense, the other soccer player becomes the defender.

X and O face goal and jog backwards away from ball.

When X changes direction and sprints to ball, O reacts and also sprints to ball.

Now X and O play 1v1 on net.

After 1v1, X goes to line of O's waiting and O behind X's.

Note: Set up two or three fields to have no more than 8 players in a group.

Technical Ball-Work: Attacking and Moving

A fun attacking soccer drill that incorporates many of the game's fundamental soccer skills like dribbling, defending, passing, alertness, and shooting.

Divide each team in half, one half of each team play while the other half wait on goal line as keepers

Use large goals, all shots should be below waist height

On coach's signal all players must leave the pitch immediately and return to goal line

The other half of the teams sprint out to take over the game

If a player touches the ball again after the signal award a point to the other team

Be unpredictable in the timing of your calls

As a soccer midfielder and forward, U.S. Women's National Team star Heather O'Reilly loves working on soccer shooting drills the most. She thinks it's best to have just 4 or 5 people involved in the shooting drills so each player gets a lot more ball touches.

Transcription:

As a midfielder and forward, I love shooting drills. I think they're the most fun. I could be out on the field for hours, shooting, doing volleys. And the best is when you just have four or five people out there with you. You get so many shots in, and it's just so much fun. So, I love shooting.

Something that maybe is not so fun is definitely the fitness work. I mean, I don't mind running, but it's definitely not what I'm going to wake up and dance around my apartment to. I think that soccer is so fitness-based, especially now I changed positions and I'm a midfielder. So, my fitness has kind of changed. Now I have to last 90 minutes going from basically end line to end line. So, that's something that you really have to put the time and the work into, in order to see the results.

Heather O’Reilly: Shooting Drills

As the name suggests, this fun kids soccer drill is mainly about encouraging a good attitude toward soccer shooting skills. A soccer player who claims to be a striker but who passes when a shot was on, or who wastes time with unnecessary soccer ball touches is not going to get your team many goals.

Set up grid as shown with half-way line marked - reduced size for younger players

Split both teams in two with more players in defensive half

No player crosses half-way line at any time

All restarts from keepers

Keeper serves to player in own half

1 point for shot on target, 2 points for goal from attacking half and 3 for goal from own half.

Have A Go!

This is a very versatile soccer drill that can be used to coach a large variety of soccer topics. It can be adapted for very young soccer players while still being a useful and serious soccer drill for older soccer groups. It's a fun soccer drill and easy to set up.

Set up: Pair up players who are equally matched and give them numbers. Coach calls number and passes ball into play. Players compete 1v1 and try to score through opponents goal. Rest of players must not move off goal-line and cannot save with hands. For younger group players link arms: shot must be below waist height.

Make it competitive - keep the score

The Numbers Game

Accurate soccer shooting skills takes regular practice through soccer drills. This shooting gallery soccer drill is a useful way of organizing a team for repetitive shooting drill practice so that they get as much time on the soccer ball as possible.

Use discs and poles to divide up lanes with 4 yd goals and keepers

Keep at least a 2 yard gap between goals

Player at either end of each lane take turns at shooting

Make sure they give keeper plenty time to turn, don't shoot until keeper signals he is ready

Do not allow player to shoot from too close in for goalkeeper safety

Shooting Gallery

In this attacking soccer drill, time favors the defense, so soccer strikers must take their shots without delay. Watching one of your soccer players taking an eternity to tee-up a shooting opportunity is one of the most frustrating things for a coach. This soccer drill will give the group loads of soccer practice at finishing shots under pressure.

Organize the group into two teams and pair them up, the keeper is neutral.

The first player from each team stand together facing the coach.

The coach lobs the ball over their heads and they turn and compete for the ball.

They play until the ball is dead - goal, save or ball out of the area.

The next pair step up quickly for their turn, after each round make sure everybody has a new opponent.

Make it competitive - Award a point for shot on target and two points for a goal

The Corner kick, when delivered properly, can create a number of scoring opportunities for your soccer team. Using corner kick soccer drills in practice will help improve your team's opportunities to score on offense as well as prevent goals on defense as the defenders try to stop the attack.

If a player is practicing alone, he or she can set two cones in front of the goal, one five yards in front and the other ten yards in parallel position. From the corner kick location of the field the individual player can practice getting ball in the air and landing between the cones in front of the net.

The Corner Kick

This is a soccer attacking and shooting drill for youth soccer players of all ages. Shooting is one of the most important soccer attacking skills, because if you can't shoot, then you can't score.

Power Shooting

This soccer passing and dribbling drill pits two equal number teams in adjacent squares, each with a soccer ball. One member from each team becomes the Invader and starts in the opposing team's square without a soccer ball. Players with a soccer ball dribble around their square and try to prevent the Invader from taking their soccer ball.

Invasion

A soccer shooting drill with a twist to improve your soccer attack. Soccer players and coaches rely on a good imagination to add some extra pressure to the attacking soccer player in hopes of "saving the world."

How it works: Tell the group the story of the films Armageddon/Deep Impact where an asteroid is heading towards earth and will destroy the planet unless their missiles can blow it up.

The balls are the missiles and the goal is the asteroid.

Set the group a target they must achieve to save the earth. Make this first target easily achievable eg. 3 minutes to impact, 3 missiles to destroy the asteroid.

On a signal from the coach Player 1 in each square has to dribble their ball through each of the other three squares (in any order) and then stop the ball anywhere between the two cones in line with the penalty spot.

Player 1 must run back to their square after leaving their ball (loading their missile) between the cones.

As soon as Player 1 is in the square Player 2 must do the same and then Player 3.

The Shootout Game

This is the most basic of all small-sided soccer drills. Soccer scrimmages with fewer players get everyone involved and more touches on the ball for each player.

Set up a small field with small soccer goals. Host as many soccer fields as you require given the amount of players you have at practice. Two fields are pictured on the diagram.

3v3, 4v4, 5v5 Scrimmages

This is an intense offensive and defensive soccer drill with lots of passing, shooting and speed.

Set-up: Form your team into groups of three players. Host as many games as you must, always depending on how many people showed up to practice. If you need to, have a game of 4v4 or have an extra player play permanent offense on one field.

Make a small goal roughly 3 feet big.

One of the team scores from one side of the goal, the other team scores from the other direction.

3v3 One Goal

In this soccer drill, players work on their passing skills, soccer ball possession skills and movement in all directions. This is a multi-dimensional, multi-targeted scrimmage soccer drill.

Set-up: Split your team into 2 even groups so you can host two games. Each group should then split itself once more into two small teams. So the result is is 4 soccer teams of 2.

This soccer drill creates a soccer game-like situation with one neutral player who is always on the attacking or offensive soccer team. This soccer drill Improves all around soccer skills and speed.

It is always good to end each soccer practice with a game like situation so if you have 15 players, this is a good way to simulate a game. The players are usually tired at the end of soccer practice and that is what the end of a game will feel like so they should practice playing hard when they're tired.

Transcription:

Coach: Coaches, it's very important to finish every training session with a game as close to the numbers that they actually play in the league on Saturday or Sunday. Here, we have 15 players and for this age group they normally play eight versus eight. With 15 players, I don't have eight versus eight. But what I did do is playing seven versus seven, and one neutral player who plays for both teams. So when the team has the ball, they have eight players. Something that you should take into account is that these guys have been playing and training for close to two hours in some pretty tough heat. They're doing a great job for us, but it's certainly expected that some things tend to break down as they work out in the heat. I'm very proud of these boys today.

Thank you. Good idea, good idea. Head home. Halt. If I take my ball right now and I go home, and somebody who has come up here and look at the shape of both teams, would they be able to tell which team is attacking and which team is defending? Okay, so halt for a moment. Green is attacking, so change your shape. Let me just see. I like that. I like that, Keeper [SP], that you become connected, beautiful. Get out of this space so you can come into it. Okay? Get out of it. Get out of it so you can come into it. Good. Good. Get out of here so he can come in or maybe he can find you.

Get the ball moving. Good. Well done. Well done in the back. Keep it moving, Zack, with a dribble in the past (?). Good. Holie [SP], Keeper, I want you right now, since your team...we're going to let Green have the...is your team Green or Blue? You're Green?

Keeper: Yes.

Coach: Okay, sort your team out because evidently they're not sorting the shape out. You have the ball, you're gonna distribute it. Tell them where you want them to go. Where are your backs going? Talk to them. Yeah, I know. What kind of shape do you want? Good. Hey, hold on a minute. How about at the midfield? What do you wanna see at the midfield? Open it up. Good. Come on out here, right to the touchline. Good. Central mid, stretch it a little bit so you can check back in there, and you stay high forward. Okay. Look forward, open up. That's green ball, we're not blue. Good. Well done, Zack. Nice ball, Pam. Change it, Zack, try to find another place. Good idea.

The Soccer Rainbow Trick

OBJECTIVES

The aim here is to encourage your players to look for 1v1 situations, to have the confidence to beat a player and to know when to play a pass.

SET UP

You require 12 players for this conditioned game with the squad divided into 3 teams of 4, 4 players in the boxes and the others playing against each other.
The area should be 40 yds by 30 yds at least but increase according to the size and age of the players. Each box within the area should be 5 yds by 5 yds.
The coach starts the game by playing the first pass into one of the teams of 4.
The team in possession must try to create 1v1 situations and retain control of the ball. Once they complete 3 passes they can then pass into one of the boxes. When the player in the box receives the pass they have one touch to control and pass into another box.
When the other box receives the pass the player passes to the opposite team who again repeats the exercise to try and create 1v1's.
When the game has been played at a high tempo for a minimum of 3 minutes the teams rotate positions and repeat the game.

In teaching this ball control soccer skill, Brandi's brother Chad explains how to protect the soccer ball by getting stronger on it with your body, turning, and then exploding into the newly created space.

Using cones setup diagonally from each other, soccer players attack each cone with a ball, then stop the ball at the cone. While stopping the soccer ball, they use their body to protect the ball and turn it toward the next cone. They then accelerate in that direction. Each player in line goes once the player in front of them is at least a cone ahead.

This classic soccer drill that's like the game of tag reminds us of how important footwork is as a soccer skill. In this soccer drill video, soccer star Brandi Chastain instructs campers to keep their heads up and be alert to where soccer defenders are coming from and where to move without a soccer ball.

Tail Tag Drill

In this soccer drill, soccer star Brandi Chastain demonstrates how to dribble with eyes and head up so you can see what's taking place on the soccer field around you. When you take a long touch with the ball you have the opportunity to run full speed after it with your eyes and head up, seeing the rest of the field including your teammates and defenders.

Eyes Up Drill with Brandi Chastain

A dribbling and ball control soccer drill that reinforces the age-old lesson of keeping your head up when you move with the soccer ball. Soccer players line up behind each other and then dribble full speed toward each cone that is lined up diagonally from each other in a staggered path.

Each player in line waits for the player in front of them to reach the first cone before going themselves.

Once they reach the cone they use their inside foot closest to the cone to stop the ball and protect it is as they turn with the ball in the other direction to attack the next cone.

The cones act as defenders and this soccer drill helps improve ball protection skills as well as teaching players to keep their heads up when they dribble.

A fun, offensive-oriented soccer drill for short fields that helps soccer players make good decisions about when to pass, when to dribble and when to shoot the soccer ball.

Transcription:

Coach: Three soccer balls. Each one of these little goals, these cones, represents a goal. The only way to score is to dribble through. Okay? Now, three balls, a lot of opportunities to score, a lot of space, a lot of teammates. Now, does this mean always dribble?

Girl 1: No.

Coach: Does it mean always pass?

Girl 1: No.

Coach: It means we make good, aggressive decisions about when it's time to dribble and when it's time to pass. Okay? Ready? Play!
Girl 2: One!

Girl 3: Two. Through, through.
Aggressive Decision Making with Brandi Chastain

A valuable ball control soccer skill in controlling possession. Effective chest trapping soccer drills teach players of all ages to get the ball out of the air and down onto the field to make plays.

When receiving the soccer ball in the air, turn your chest either toward where you want to bring the ball down to or away from the pressure of the defenders.

Chest Trapping

In this ball control soccer drill, you'll find probably the most common soccer skill which is to trap a ball in soccer game situations. Remember that there is more foot surface area on this part of the foot, making trapping easier.

Inside of Foot Control

In this ball control soccer drill for more advanced players, the coach will line up cones and each player will attack the cones one by one performing the soccer move.

In the soccer drill, the player goes at game speed and uses the foot closest to the cone to roll the ball to their outside foot. They then step over it with the opposite/outside foot, making it look like they're changing direction again but they are really not touching the ball. This move allows the player to continue in the same direction while faking out their defender.

Roll and Stepover

This soccer skill is key to keeping possession on defense or offense when dribbling the soccer ball. Adding this soccer skill to your soccer practice drills will help your team keep control of the ball in games and develop that mentality of protecting the ball which is critical to being a successful youth soccer team.

Shielding the Ball

Get the blood flowing and the heart pumping before you start your soccer practice and touch a soccer ball with this soccer drill designed for the beginning of soccer practice.

In this warm up soccer drill, you'll drop the soccer ball from your hands to your foot, kicking it straight up into the air. The goal is to have your ankle locked so there is no spin on the ball and it comes right back down to you.

The Warm-Up Drill

In many parts of the world, this soccer drill is called "World Cup" or "Copa Mundial." Using half the soccer field, divide your soccer team into pairs and assign them a country to represent. Each pair of soccer teammates works together to score goals... or work with other pairs to defend teams from scoring. This soccer drill helps improve offensive soccer skills like passing, dribbling, and shooting as well as defensive soccer skills.

The Doubles Bracket Game

In this soccer drill, players work on their soccer dribbling skills, attacking the open space, and playing together as a soccer team.

Blue Attackers dribble through the three levels, defended by the Yellow Defenders.

Defenders must stay in their zones and try to kick any ball out of bounds.

Attackers work in groups of three.

As soon as a Defender wins a ball or clears in, the next Attackers go.

When an Attack team ahead of you in line moves to the next zone, you can also go.

After beating the final Defender, the Attacker must shoot and score to get a point.

Great for 1v1 soccer skills on both sides of the soccer ball.

Create lanes with cones, each lane about 20 feet wide. Create pairs in each lane, with each player taking turns being attacker (A) and defender (D). The attacker tries to dribble past the defender while staying in the lane. If defender gets the ball out of the lane, they switch roles for the next round.

Swim Lanes

A ball control soccer dribbling drill that works with players who need to make split-second turns, thus working on reaction time and ball-handling soccer skills.

How it works:

The coach numbers the corner cones of the grid 1 - 4.

On a signal from the coach, Player 1s dribble into a 10 x 10 grid at the start of a channel.

As the players enter the grid the coach calls a number. The players must dribble the ball around that cone and then continue to the end of the channel and back around to the end of their own line.

Coach repeats this for other players calling different numbers each time.

Cone Numbers

This is a good warm-up soccer drill where soccer players have a soccer ball and dribble around the playing area, keeping control of the soccer ball and their heads up. A coach holds up a colored cone and the players have to perform the soccer skill/instruction or dribbling skill that matches that cone. The coach will have to introduce each soccer skill one at a time and give the soccer players time to practice each of them.

A few suggestions for soccer skills & instructions are as follows:

Green - players dribble around area

Red - players stop and put foot on the ball

Orange - players touch ball between insteps of both feet without moving

White - players sit on the ball

Blue - players pick up the ball and hold it above their head Yellow - players use left foot only.

**possibilities are endless

How To Do a D1 College Soccer Team Warm Up

Jozy Altidore is one of the bright young stars playing soccer for the U.S. Soccer team. He currently plays for Sunderland in the English Premier League and recently teamed up with Go Pro Workouts to share his off-season training program with young aspiring athletes. Two exercises that Jozy performs regularly improving his quickness and core strength are the side planks with rotation and barbell front squats. Start incorporating these exercises into your athlete’s training routine and help them become faster and more complete players.

Exercise: Side Plank with Rotation

Exercise Description: Hold yourself up on a forearm with your legs straight and extended to your rear. Raise the opposite arm straight into the air toward the ceiling. Next, rotate that straight arm to the ground and underneath your body. Pause briefly and then return it back into the air. Repeat motion and then switch sides.

Perform: 4 sets, 10 reps each side.

Exercise: Barbell Front Squats
