The Importance of Speed

<p><strong>OBJECTIVES</strong></p>

<p>Develop the players&#39; understanding of how to attack in a 2 v 1 situation.</p>

<p><strong>SET UP</strong></p>

<p>Players divided into two teams of 4 and stand at either end of a 20x30 box.<br />
The defender starts with the ball and plays a long pass into either of the two attackers. Once the attackers receive the ball their objective is to cross the end of the box the defender has come from. The defender tries to either win possession or knock the ball out of play. When the play ends, the next defender in red repeats the process with the next two blue attackers in sequence. Once the blues have all had a chance to attack, the roles reverse and the session is repeated.</p>

<p><strong>COACHING POINTS</strong></p>

<p>The emphasis is on the attackers therefore you should only focus your coaching points on the players in possession.<br />
When the first attacker receives the ball they should look to take a good first touch of the ball by cushioning it in front of their feet. Quickly they should focus on committing the defender whilst the second attacker creates space by running wide but not ahead of the ball. Once the defender is close the first attacker must decide either to play a pass to the supporting attacker or use disguise to beat the defender and accelerate forward to the goal line. In order to prevent the defender from gaining ground the attacker can cut back across the path of the defender forcing the player to hesitate to avoid a collision.</p>

How To: Soccer Attacking in a 2v1 Formation

<p><strong>SET UP</strong></p>

<p>4 squares marked out with 9 cones 5 yards outside the penalty area. Squares are 8 yards x 8 yards.<br />
Players A and B (midfielders) play short sharp passes to each other 4 or 5 times. When ready, Player A takes a touch to open their body and face the goal. When given this visual signal, Player C (Striker) demands the ball and moves towards Player A. Player A plays a firm pass which is directed at the path of Player C but is intended for Player D. Once the pass goes passed Player C the player spins into the path of the pass and towards Player D. Player D is positioned in the diagonally opposite box and receives and cushions a pass for Player C. Player D after cushioning the pass opens out his body facing Player C and runs backwards to receive the pass back from Player C and then shoots at the target.</p>

<p>Players should work on the timing of the passes and the runs to ensure that it all happens eventually with one touch.</p>

<p>Players should rotate roles in being midfielders and strikers to gain an understanding of the importance of each position.</p>

<p><strong>COACHING POINTS</strong></p>

<p>Players need to work on the strength of the pass from midfield to ensure it has enough weight to go passed the first striker and into the feet of the second striker.</p>

<p>The first striker needs to ensure that they do not move towards the ball too early and so must look for a visual indication that the midfielder is about to release a pass.</p>

<p>The second striker needs to retain the length in the game and needs to remain in a diagonally opposite position from the midfielder and the first striker.</p>

<p>The pass from second striker to first striker needs to be cushioned so that the first striker can play it back first time.</p>

<p>The shot at goal needs to be on target and composed.</p>

Twin Strikers

<p>4 boxes outside the penalty area measuring 15 yds X 22 yds.</p>

<p>2 strikers (Players C and D) have starting positions in diagonally opposite boxes with two feeder players (Players A and B) positioned around halfway. This set up should simulate the area on the pitch where the scenario would normally develop.</p>

<p>The drill begins with the two feeders playing short, sharp passes to each other whilst the two strikers await a visual signal. Once the feeder who will eventually pass it turns to face the strikers the striker on the side of the feeder moves into the box closest to receive the ball. At this stage the other striker should be positioned diagonally opposite.</p>

<p>The first striker receives the ball and dribbles at pace diagonally towards the second striker. The second striker then moves towards the first striker and arcs their run to cut across and wide of the player dribbling. The first striker then plays into the path of the second striker who shoots at the target.</p>

<p>The drill should be repeated until the timing of the passes and the runs are perfected and smooth.</p>

<p>The strikers must make their first move when the feeder is ready to play.</p>

<p>The feeders should play a light weight of pass to the first striker.</p>

<p>Once the second striker has received they must quickly execute an accurate shot at the target.</p>

Striker Combination Play 1




<p><strong>Objectives</strong></p>

<p>We want to prepare our players the best way possible for the rigours of the season ahead but also to make the process as enjoyable as possible so that the players perform in a positive way.</p>

<p>We want the players to gain both anaerobic and aerobic levels of fitness as well as working technically and tactically.</p>

<p><strong>Setup</strong></p>

<p>Each session should include all the dynamic warm up routines each routine being repeated 10 times per player or 5 mins in length.&nbsp;&nbsp; The warm up phase should last approximately 35 minutes.</p>

<p>The drills should last no longer than 15 mins each.</p>

<p>The game should last about 20 minutes.</p>

3v1 Possession


<p>In this one-on-one attacking soccer drill, two soccer players race for a loose soccer ball. The winner of the possession goes on offense, the other soccer player becomes the defender.</p>

<p>X and O face goal and jog backwards away from ball.</p>

<p>When X changes direction and sprints to ball, O reacts and also sprints to ball.</p>

<p>Now X and O play 1v1 on net.</p>

<p>After 1v1, X goes to line of O&#39;s waiting and O behind X&#39;s.</p>

<p>As a soccer midfielder and forward, U.S. Women&#39;s National Team star Heather O&#39;Reilly loves working on soccer shooting drills the most. She thinks it&#39;s best to have just 4 or 5 people involved in the shooting drills so each player gets a lot more ball touches.</p>

<p>As a midfielder and forward, I love shooting drills. I think they&#39;re the most fun. I could be out on the field for hours, shooting, doing volleys. And the best is when you just have four or five people out there with you. You get so many shots in, and it&#39;s just so much fun. So, I love shooting.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Something that maybe is not so fun is definitely the fitness work. I mean, I don&#39;t mind running, but it&#39;s definitely not what I&#39;m going to wake up and dance around my apartment to. I think that soccer is so fitness-based, especially now I changed positions and I&#39;m a midfielder. So, my fitness has kind of changed. Now I have to last 90 minutes going from basically end line to end line. So, that&#39;s something that you really have to put the time and the work into, in order to see the results.</p>

Heather O&#8217;Reilly: Shooting Drills


<p>As the name suggests, this fun kids soccer drill is mainly about encouraging a good attitude toward soccer shooting skills. A soccer player who claims to be a striker but who passes when a shot was on, or who wastes time with unnecessary soccer ball touches is not going to get your team many goals.</p>

<p><em>Set up grid as shown with half-way line marked - reduced size for younger players</em></p>

<p><em>Split both teams in two with more players in defensive half</em></p>

Have A Go!


<p>This is a very versatile soccer drill that can be used to coach a large variety of soccer topics. It can be adapted for very young soccer players while still being a useful and serious soccer drill for older soccer groups. It&#39;s a fun soccer drill and easy to set up.</p>

<p>Set up: Pair up players who are equally matched and give them numbers. Coach calls number and passes ball into play. Players compete 1v1 and try to score through opponents goal. Rest of players must not move off goal-line and cannot save with hands. For younger group players link arms: shot must be below waist height.</p>

The Numbers Game


<p>Accurate soccer shooting skills takes regular practice through soccer drills. This shooting gallery soccer drill is a useful way of organizing a team for repetitive shooting drill practice so that they get as much time on the soccer ball as possible.</p>

<p><em>Use discs and poles to divide up lanes with 4 yd goals and keepers</em></p>

<p><em>Keep at least a 2 yard gap between goals</em></p>

<p>In this attacking soccer drill, time favors the defense, so soccer strikers must take their shots without delay. Watching one of your soccer players taking an eternity to tee-up a shooting opportunity is one of the most frustrating things for a coach. This soccer drill will give the group loads of soccer practice at finishing shots under pressure.</p>

<p><em>Organize the group into two teams and pair them up, the keeper is neutral.</em></p>

<p><em>The first player from each team stand together facing the coach.</em></p>

<p><em>The coach lobs the ball over their heads and they turn and compete for the ball.</em></p>

<p><em>They play until the ball is dead - goal, save or ball out of the area.</em></p>

<p><em>The next pair step up quickly for their turn, after each round make sure everybody has a new opponent.</em></p>

<p>The Corner kick, when delivered properly, can create a number of scoring opportunities for your soccer team. Using corner kick soccer drills in practice will help improve your team&#39;s opportunities to score on offense as well as prevent goals on defense as the defenders try to stop the attack.</p>

<p>If a player is practicing alone, he or she can set two cones in front of the goal, one five yards in front and the other ten yards in parallel position. From the corner kick location of the field the individual player can practice getting ball in the air and landing between the cones in front of the net.</p>

Power Shooting


<p>This soccer passing and dribbling drill pits two equal number teams in adjacent squares, each with a soccer ball. One member from each team becomes the Invader and starts in the opposing team&#39;s square without a soccer ball. Players with a soccer ball dribble around their square and try to prevent the Invader from taking their soccer ball.</p>

Invasion


<p>A soccer shooting drill with a twist to improve your soccer attack. Soccer players and coaches rely on a good imagination to add some extra pressure to the attacking soccer player in hopes of "saving the world."</p>

<p><strong>How it works</strong>: Tell the group the story of the films Armageddon/Deep Impact where an asteroid is heading towards earth and will destroy the planet unless their missiles can blow it up.</p>

<p>The balls are the missiles and the goal is the asteroid.</p>

<p>Set the group a target they must achieve to save the earth. Make this first target easily achievable eg. 3 minutes to impact, 3 missiles to destroy the asteroid.</p>

<p>On a signal from the coach Player 1 in each square has to dribble their ball through each of the other three squares (in any order) and then stop the ball anywhere between the two cones in line with the penalty spot.</p>

<p>Player 1 must run back to their square after leaving their ball (loading their missile) between the cones.</p>

<p>As soon as Player 1 is in the square Player 2 must do the same and then Player 3.</p>

The Shootout Game


<p>This is the most basic of all small-sided soccer drills. Soccer scrimmages with fewer players get everyone involved and more touches on the ball for each player.</p>

<p>Set up a small field with small soccer goals. Host as many soccer fields as you require given the amount of players you have at practice. Two fields are pictured on the diagram.</p>

3v3, 4v4, 5v5 Scrimmages


<p>This is an intense offensive and defensive soccer drill with lots of passing, shooting and speed.</p>

<p><strong>Set-up</strong>: Form your team into groups of three players. Host as many games as you must, always depending on how many people showed up to practice. If you need to, have a game of 4v4 or have an extra player play permanent offense on one field.</p>

<p>Make a small goal roughly 3 feet big.</p>

<p>One of the team scores from one side of the goal, the other team scores from the other direction.</p>

3v3 One Goal


<p>In this soccer drill, players work on their passing skills, soccer ball possession skills and movement in all directions. This is a multi-dimensional, multi-targeted scrimmage soccer drill.</p>

<p>Set-up: Split your team into 2 even groups so you can host two games. Each group should then split itself once more into two small teams. So the result is is 4 soccer teams of 2.</p>

Four Goals

<p>This soccer drill creates a soccer game-like situation with one neutral player who is always on the attacking or offensive soccer team. This soccer drill Improves all around soccer skills and speed.</p>

<p>It is always good to end each soccer practice with a game like situation so if you have 15 players, this is a good way to simulate a game. The players are usually tired at the end of soccer practice and that is what the end of a game will feel like so they should practice playing hard when they&#39;re tired.</p>

<p>Transcription:</p>

<p>Coach: Coaches, it&#39;s very important to finish every training session with a game as close to the numbers that they actually play in the league on Saturday or Sunday. Here, we have 15 players and for this age group they normally play eight versus eight. With 15 players, I don&#39;t have eight versus eight. But what I did do is playing seven versus seven, and one neutral player who plays for both teams. So when the team has the ball, they have eight players. Something that you should take into account is that these guys have been playing and training for close to two hours in some pretty tough heat. They&#39;re doing a great job for us, but it&#39;s certainly expected that some things tend to break down as they work out in the heat. I&#39;m very proud of these boys today.<br />

<p><strong>OBJECTIVES</strong></p>

<p>The aim here is to encourage your players to look for 1v1 situations, to have the confidence to beat a player and to know when to play a pass.</p>

<p><strong>SET UP</strong></p>

<p>You require 12 players for this conditioned game with the squad divided into 3 teams of 4, 4 players in the boxes and the others playing against each other.<br />
The area should be 40 yds by 30 yds at least but increase according to the size and age of the players. Each box within the area should be 5 yds by 5 yds.<br />
The coach starts the game by playing the first pass into one of the teams of 4.<br />
The team in possession must try to create 1v1 situations and retain control of the ball. Once they complete 3 passes they can then pass into one of the boxes. When the player in the box receives the pass they have one touch to control and pass into another box.<br />
When the other box receives the pass the player passes to the opposite team who again repeats the exercise to try and create 1v1&#39;s.<br />
When the game has been played at a high tempo for a minimum of 3 minutes the teams rotate positions and repeat the game.</p>

<p><strong>COACHING POINTS</strong></p>

<p>Players should aim to create space before receiving the ball then quickly secure possession before lifting their head and looking for a player to beat.<br />
The player must make quick decisions when approaching the defender and determine if they can dribble passed the player or should they pass to a team mate.<br />
Players must be constantly on the move and aware of their surroundings.</p>

They then step over it with the opposite/outside foot, making it look like they&#39;re changing direction again but they are really not touching the ball. This move allows the player to continue in the same direction while faking out their defender.</p>

<p>Create lanes with cones, each lane about 20 feet wide. Create pairs in each lane, with each player taking turns being attacker (A) and defender (D). <p>How it works:</p>

	<li>The coach numbers the corner cones of the grid 1 - 4.</li>
	<li>On a signal from the coach, Player 1s dribble into a 10 x 10 grid at the start of a channel.</li>
	<li>As the players enter the grid the coach calls a number. The players must dribble the ball around that cone and then continue to the end of the channel and back around to the end of their own line.</li>
	<li>Coach repeats this for other players calling different numbers each time.</li>

<p>This is a good warm-up soccer drill where soccer players have a soccer ball and dribble around the playing area, keeping control of the soccer ball and their heads up. A coach holds up a colored cone and the players have to perform the soccer skill/instruction or dribbling skill that matches that cone. The coach will have to introduce each soccer skill one at a time and give the soccer players time to practice each of them.</p>

How To Do a D1 College Soccer Team Warm Up




<p>Jozy Altidore is one of the bright young stars playing <a href="https://www.teamsnap.com/teams/sports/soccer">soccer</a> for the U.S. Soccer team. He currently plays for Sunderland in the English Premier League and recently teamed up with Go Pro Workouts to share his off-season training program with young aspiring athletes. Two exercises that Jozy performs regularly improving his quickness and core strength are the side planks with rotation and barbell front squats. Start incorporating these exercises into your athlete&rsquo;s training routine and help them become faster and more complete players.</p>

<p>Exercise: Side Plank with Rotation</p>

<p>Exercise Description:&nbsp;Hold yourself up on a forearm with your legs straight and extended to your rear. Raise the opposite arm straight into the air toward the ceiling. Next, rotate that straight arm to the ground and underneath your body. Pause briefly and then return it back into the air. Repeat motion and then switch sides.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Perform: 4 sets, 10 reps each side.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Exercise: Barbell Front Squats</p>

<p>Exercise Description: Hold the barbell with your palms facing upward and hands at shoulder-width distance. Your feet should be at shoulder-width distance as well. Keeping a neutral spine, squat slowly to the ground until your buttocks and knees become parallel. Pause briefly and raise up. Repeat.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Perform: 4 sets, 8 reps each.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This is a half-field attacking soccer drill using small subsets of your soccer team. This puts game-like pressure on each team and they must be very precise in their decisions in order to not turn the ball over.</p>
