<p>Good defense in volleyball starts with blocking. In this youth volleyball video, a girls&#39; coach breaks down the proper technique for blocking and these key volleyball skills are then demonstrated.</p>

<p>Transcription:</p>

<p>Your first line of defense is your blocker. In this segment we&#39;re going to talk about the basic technique of blocking.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Rachel&#39;s gonna position herself at the net with her hands in front of her face. Her fingers are spread wide so that she can cover as much surface. When she&#39;s ready to block, she&#39;s gonna bend down and explode above the net. Her hands are going to penetrate the plane of the net to make sure that she makes contact with the ball.<br />
<br />
You also have to think about the timing, when you block. You need to jump for your block just after the hitter that you&#39;re blocking has jumped. Rachel, show us what the block looks like.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Good. You see the way she lands: she lands soft on her feet, with her knees bent, ready to block the next hit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It&#39;s important for a youth volleyball player to explode into an attack shot. In this youth volleyball video, a coach breaks down one of the most important youth volleyball skills with a three-step approach.</p>

<p>Transcription:</p>

<p>An attack has two major elements that you need to put together in order to be effective. The first is a three step approach. Rachel is right handed so we&#39;re gonna demonstrate as a right handy would do this. The first thing Rachel is gonna do is take one small step with her left foot, and then a bigger step with her right, and then she&#39;s going to put her legs together with her final step. You see how Rachel is already bent in the legs? It&#39;s because she&#39;s ready to explode up to hit the ball. Good job, Rachel, take a step back.<br />
<br />
In conjunction with your three step approach, you need to add your arms. So, as Rachel takes her first step, she&#39;s gonna bring her hands backwards and then as she takes the next step she&#39;s gonna bring her arms forwards so that she can get the momentum. From here, she brings her arms all the way back above her head, she keeps her left arm up to guide the ball, and then, she&#39;s going to bring her arm all the way up and snap through. Let&#39;s see what this look like without a ball. Left, right, left, up, through. Good.<br />
<br />
That second step that Rachel takes is much bigger than the first because she gets all of her power from it. Let&#39;s see it again. Left, right, left, Good. When she gets to this point, before she jumps, she has lots of momentum and power in her legs and that&#39;s where Rachel gets all of her height. Let&#39;s see it one last time. Left, right, left, hit. Nice job. Now let&#39;s see what attack looks like with the ball and at full speed. Nice job. Nice job. Rachel has a big, strong left, right, left approach, she reaches up high, above the net and follows through. Let&#39;s see another one. Nice job. Nice job. You see how high Rachel gets above the net? Good job. Let&#39;s see one more, last one. Good. Nice job.</p>

Basic Attack Technique

<p>This youth volleyball drill is for more advanced volleyball players to help improvement the movement between teammates while setting, digging, and smashing.</p>

<p><strong>Description</strong></p>

<p>Player 1 sets the ball to player 2 who sets the ball back to player 1 then defensive digs the ball up in the air to player 3 who sets to player 2 to smash to player 1.</p>

<p><strong>Coaching Points</strong></p>

<p><strong>FOR DEFENSIVE DIG:</strong> Knees bent and legs just wider than shoulder width apart Eyes on the ball to the point of contact with wrists, ensuring wrists are together Head level with the ball at point of contact Ensure power through the arms to get the ball over the net.</p>

<p><strong>FOR SET:</strong> Eyes up looking at ball trajectory Knees bent On balls of feet Bending the elbows and pushing through the ball with fingers at point of contact.</p>

<p><strong>FOR SMASH:</strong> Eyes on the ball, other arm used as a guide Player leans slightly back prior to contact with the ball Upon contact, push body weight forward to generate power through the shot Stay tall on balls of feet Keep knees bent.</p>

Throw the ball in the air using two hands, move to where the ball is coming down lay down on the floor and catch the ball, when you have caught the ball throw the ball up in the air get up and catch it (when laying down be aware as to not bang your head on the floor)</p>

<p>An important youth volleyball skill to develop is learning proper positioning to receive a pass. This youth volleyball video presents one of the best volleyball drills for teaching players how to read the ball and get in a good position to receive it.</p>

<p>Transcription:</p>

<p>Coach: This drill is called the Superman drill. It&#39;s important to learn how to read the ball and get yourself in position so that you can receive the ball in the most effective way. In this drill, we&#39;re not going to actually pass the ball, we&#39;re just going to use positioning. So I&#39;m gonna toss the ball, and the players are going to position themselves so that the ball goes in between their legs. If the ball can go in between your legs, you know your position is perfect to receive the ball.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Let&#39;s see what it looks like. Nice job. Good. See how they keep their stance and they move their feet? They would be ready to pass the ball, if that&#39;s what we were doing. Nice job.<br />
<br />
Player: Got it.<br />
<br />
Coach: Last one. Good. When you&#39;re doing this drill, you need to make sure that you keep your legs low and your arms out so that you&#39;re ready to let the ball go between your legs.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This youth volleyball drill is a fun way to help a team learn to work together, and keep the ball in the air.</p>

<p><strong>Description</strong></p>

<p>Divide the court into 3 equal areas with a line across the length of the court. 8 players per small court.</p>

<p><strong>Rules</strong></p>

<ul>
	<li>Throw the ball across the net first time under arm with straight arms or 1 arm overhead and 1 straight arm underarm. These are all volleyball typical throws related to the real actions.</li>
	<li>For every team the following rule counts after the ball is thrown the team rotates clockwise one turn.</li>
	<li>Every time the ball is dropped the player that drops the ball has to leave the field, players rotate in a triangle and 2 players switch places. First team to loss all players losses the point.</li>
</ul>

<p><strong>Coaching Points</strong></p>

<p>If a team catches the ball 3 times in a row one of the players on the side may join back in.</p>

<p><strong>Description</strong></p>

<ul>
	<li>Organization: 2 players 1 ball and a hoop</li>
	<li>Each player stands about 1.5m away from the hoop Throw the ball via a bounce ball in the hoop to the other player making it as difficult as possible for the other player to catch the ball. After catching the ball the other player throws the ball back as quick as possible to make the player move.</li>
	<li>Point scored as soon as one of the players drops the ball.</li>
</ul>

<p>Volley the ball to your partner who digs the ball to themselves then volley the ball back to you, while they are doing that you do a dive, roll or something else then they do the same as you dig and volley. Do this for a set time or number of good contacts.</p>

4 player Dig Pass Relay

<p>This youth volleyball drill is a helpful warm up tool to teach beginner volleyball players on how to react and move to a high volley pass.</p>

<p><strong>Description</strong></p>

<p>You start the game with a throw over the net.</p>

<p>The two on the other side of the net communicate one moves towards the net and one volleys the ball, the one that has moved to the net faces their partner who passes the ball to them with a high pass from a volley position with the ball above their forehead.</p>

<p>The person at the net volleys the ball for there partner who is about 2 meters away from the net facing them with the hand up nearest the net pointing where they want the next high pass to be placed, passes the ball high to the area pointed at and that player moves in, and volleys the ball over the net.</p>

<p>Then both players return to a side by side playing position ready to play defense.</p>

<p>This sequence is repeated without trying to score points but in a more cooperative way so that the format of the game can be learned. When both teams play this well you can make it competitive.</p>

<p>This youth volleyball drill is for players to be able to control the ball over differing distances. Again this can either be measured by time or number of good volleys.</p>

<p><strong>Description</strong></p>

	<li>Start the ball with one of the middle players who volleys the ball to the middle player.</li>
	<li>Then they volley it back to the outside player who then volleys over the two middle players to the outside player on the opposite side.</li>
	<li>As the other players are working the players that have just worked change places and repeat.</li>
</ul>
