<p>In this lacrosse video Major League Lacrosse player Matt Danowski explains how to protect the ball when you are receiving. A lot throws in a lacrosse game are not perfect, so players must learn to adjust with their body and stick in order to catch the ball. Matt has some great lacrosse tips in this video, watch as he demonstrates how to catch balls in all sorts of positions and still protect the ball.</p>

<p>Transcription:</p>

<p>When receiving the ball from your teammate, you want to put a nice good target up by your head. Unfortunately during the game of lacrosse, you&#39;re not always gonna receive the ball where you want it. So you got to be able to adjust and catch the ball when it&#39;s thrown opposite when it&#39;s thrown low, when it&#39;s thrown at your feet. So, the technique here, when Dan throws the ball across my buddy, is to catch it here and to curl my hand over and bring the stick back across my face. I don&#39;t wanna catch it here and then bring it like this, where the head of my stick it&#39;s facing out because if I do get checked, the ball is out for live play and it&#39;s a ground ball for a defenseman to pick up. I want to be able to catch the ball, and protect it across my face, and bring it back to that triple threat position by my head.<br />
<br />
So, I&#39;ll show you another one here. Now, watch my hands when I receive the ball from Dan. I catch it, I curl back across my body and bring it right back to my face here so I can catch it. Either pass it, shoot it, or protect my stick from this position. Now, not all passes are gonna to be over here or right here. They could be low by your hip, they could be low by your feet. So sometimes, you need to be able to adjust, and I&#39;ll have to catch with my left hand when I&#39;m holding the stick with my right hand. So if Dan throws me the ball here, I need to be able to catch a lefty, and, you know, protect my stick with my body and head here, or bring it back to my right hand.<br />
<br />
All right, Dan, throw me another one here by my hip. Even if it&#39;s thrown to your right hip, you have to move your feet, use your body to move to that ball, catch it, and bring it back up to your head. This would be a great drill to do off the wall, to throw it off the wall on a spot, to catch it and bring it back. Throw it off a different spot on the wall, catch across the [wide?] of body and bring it back. All this could be done either with a partner or by yourself. So I&#39;ll have Dan just to fire me a couple here, in a row, and I will just show you how I move my body and my stick to catch the ball. Oh, wide one. You can&#39;t catch all of them, you&#39;re gonna miss one eventually. The important thing is to stay with it and be able to practice all different kinds of catches and throws.&nbsp;</p>

Receiving and Protecting the Ball

<p>The All-in-one drill is intended to give all the fundamental skills, scooping, passing, catching, dodging, and over-the-shoulder catching, all-in-one drill. So the idea is it emulates every skill you need to be a complete lacrosse player.<br />
<br />
So, okay, you guys. This is the All-in-One drill, as you know, and we&#39;re really trying to practice good fundamentals, good ground balls. We&#39;re going to pick the ball up and do a give-and-go. We&#39;re going to dodge our teammate and then we&#39;re going to try and give her a good over-the-shoulder pass. She&#39;s going to roll it back out to the next girl in line.<br />
<br />
And it practices all your fundamental skills. The closer we can get to game speed on this, the better you&#39;re going to be in the game at doing all of these things at full speed.<br />
<br />
Yup, ground ball&#39;s away, yeah.<br />
<br />
Yeah, ground balls too. Anything you want to give her.<br />
<br />
Good. Practicing different kinds of dodges, rolling, face dodge.<br />
<br />
Nice.<br />
<br />
All right. Now, remember when you&#39;re doing the all-in-one drill, you&#39;re intending to execute all the steps in exactly the way you learned them. Getting low with two hands on the ground ball. Protecting your stick, passing and catching with good target and good accuracy, and completing your dodge effectively in order to build all the skills you need to be a complete lacrosse player.</p>

<p>In this lacrosse video, Coach Sheehan Burch and her players explain a fantastic drill for coaches to use in practice to get offensive and defensive players ready for any type of game situation. This Girls lacrosse drill applies various skills in a game-like environment.</p>

<p>Transcription:</p>

<p>We&#39;re going to demonstrate a modified hammer drill. This is a fantastic drill for coaches to use in practice to get both their defense and attack ready for game situations. The purpose of the hammer drill is depending on how many players you have out here, you can have feeders at each hash mark with the ball, or in this case we have only two field players, we have ground balls at each hash mark.<br />
<br />
The attacker receives the ball, whether by grandma pick-up or pass under pressure. Defense is playing 100% at all times. It&#39;s just two people in these eight meters. It&#39;s a condensed area, and the attacker&#39;s job is obviously to go to goal and score, and the defense&#39;s job is to make it as difficult as possible. Challenge on the catch, challenge on the ground ball. Make sure that their path to goal is really contested the entire way.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Now, if you&#39;re attacker, if you shoot and miss, the goalie makes a save, you drop the ground ball, miss the pass, whatever it is, that ball is dead. You move on to the next one.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
So, again, for coaches, you can make this a continuous sequence, possibly use five balls, after that, your players are probably going to get a little too tired. So, you want to make sure you rotate it. Keeps on going, very great movement, and a real heart rate generator for both the attack and defense.<br />
<br />
We&#39;re going to do it with some ground balls on the hash mark here. I&#39;ll be playing attack. Again, defense should be contesting the ground balls. This is game-like situation, and as attacker, you don&#39;t have all day. You want to make sure you make a great path to goal. If the goalie makes a save, you just start running and going after that next ball.<br />
<br />
So, try to make a move, I&#39;m going to go after the ground ball. Defense is on me. Try to get open. Make a shot, and I go right after the second ball. Good defense here. Fake the goalie, make a shot, and then I&#39;m going after the next ball. You keep on going until you run out of opportunities. Rolled, ball down, I&#39;m going after the next ball.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
You can see this makes the defense move and work just as much as the attack. And, you can hear me breathing now. This will really get you ready for game-like situations. Again, use as many balls as you want. You can add feeders out there to get the whole team involved. Great way to practice game-like movement.&nbsp;</p>

Hammer Drill | Best Girls Lacrosse Drills

<p>In this lacrosse video Coach Matt Ward explains and demonstrates the Triple Threat position, from which a lacrosse player can dodge and run with the ball, pass, or shoot. This is another essential lacrosse stick skill for young lacrosse players.</p>

<p>Once you&#39;re able to get the ball on your stick in a game of lacrosse, the best place to locate your stick is what we refer to as a triple threat position, and that position is up here, next to your head. The reason it&#39;s called the triple threat is because you have three options. You can start any dodge with your stick up by your head. You can do the face dodge, you can do the split dodge, and you can also start into your roll dodge, but you can also pass the ball, which is the second of the three options when it&#39;s in triple threat. If I have my stick up here, my stick is the in the perfect position to throw a pass to a team mate, but also it allows you to shoot the ball. All good shooting motions start with the stick in the over hand position near your head. So remember, if you&#39;re able to have your stick in the triple threat position, you have many more options to be an effective lacrosse player, and you always have the opportunity to shoot the ball.</p>

<p>In this lacrosse video Major League Lacrosse player Mikey Powell teaches the proper technique for a face dodge. Mastering the face dodge will bring many opportunities to an offensive player to blow past the defender and take a shot on goal.</p>

<p>My job on every lacrosse team I&#39;ve ever been on has been to be the main dodger. An offense can&#39;t be successful unless one of the guys knows how to dodge and create an even and odd situation. So there&#39;s a couple of different dodges that I like to use and let&#39;s talk about the first one.<br />
<br />
The first one is called the face dodge. A face dodge usually, most of the time is set up looking like you&#39;re about to shoot. When I approach a shot, if you&#39;ve ever held a lacrosse ball, you know these are pretty hard. So my defenceman is probably gonna tense up a little bit knowing that there&#39;s a ball that&#39;s gonna be coming at him.<br />
<br />
I want to make this..I want to sell this so I want it to look just like I&#39;m shooting. And the difference is gonna be with the face dodge all I&#39;m doing is I&#39;m stepping and I&#39;m swinging the stick across my body, keeping it in the same hand. So I&#39;m swinging it across my body.<br />
So I&#39;m gonna look like I&#39;m shooting, step in, bringing it across my body. Look at how my top hand slides up just like that. That&#39;s bringing it into a protected area. So I&#39;m coming from here where my hands are on the shaft in a shooting position, sliding my hand up as I come through and keeping it right in front of my face the entire time. So it&#39;s always protected. Once I get by him, obviously, I have him beat, this is gonna be tough for him to get back into the play so I&#39;m gonna finish it. I&#39;m gonna finish the play.<br />
<br />
So a little bit faster, my hands are away from my body just like a shot, step it in, coming through, keeping it in front of my body the whole time. Little bit faster, more game speed. So I&#39;m gonna catch it and I&#39;m trying to go as fast as I can but always keeping my stick protected. That&#39;s the face dodge.</p>

<p><em>As an offensive Lacrosse player, if you&#39;re around the cage with the ball, and you want to finish the ball you&#39;ve got to act quickly. If I&#39;m dodging from this wing, I got to decide where to shoot before I get hit. A great place to shoot if I&#39;m coming around this way is to that lower right corner.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The goalie is going to be on the near pipe, taking up that spot. If I shoot high to low into that corner, I&#39;m most likely to score. So it&#39;s a split second decision, you&#39;ve got to visualize the ball going in, and hit the spot. Let me demonstrate one here. Just remember, get a shot off quick. The shot doesn&#39;t have to be a perfect shot, just hit your spot.</em></p>
