<p>Help your youth football player advance his or her skills on the field with the Auditory Slides drill. Great for players looking to improve their reaction and speed during lateral movement.</p>

<p>Transcription:</p>

<p>A variation of the last drill is for the athlete to slide laterally, and then change direction when a coach or training partner gives a verbal command. The athlete should use proper lateral movement technique, and slide in one direction until the coach says switch. The athlete must react off this command, and begin sliding in the opposite direction.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The change in direction causes the athlete to efficiently reverse the roles of his feet. The trail leg that was pushing now begins pulling as the lead leg, and vice versa. The athlete should focus on reacting to the coach&#39;s command, and not jump the gun by guessing at when the command will be given.</p>

<p>Transcription:</p>

<p>Another unique and important skill for defense of athletes is the ability to quickly back pedal, and then smoothly turn 180 degrees and transition into a linear sprint. Athletes that are proficient at this skill are able to keep the action of the game in front of them as they back pedal, and then keep themselves involved in the action as it moves down the field.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
This drill begins by attaching the flexi cord to the back of the athlete and spacing the partner 10 to 12 feet behind the athlete. The athlete begins the drill by back pedaling a predetermined distance, and then snapping his hips around and transitioning into a linear sprint for the remaining marked distance.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The partner should move with the athlete to keep constant tension on the flexi cord. The pull of the flexi cord during the back pedal, and the transition to the linear sprint, makes these motions extremely challenging.</p>

It comes from all your legs and your core. And that&#39;s something... I remember at SC, we worked out, we worked a lot on that.<br />

Man: What&#39;s the best core workout? Or what&#39;s the one you did the most for core workout?<br />

Reggie: Just, you can do sit-ups, whatever, but just really working on those drills, like I was talking about, and really, you know, squats. I don&#39;t know if you guys do power cleans, that&#39;s a good explosive drill.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
All the drills we did, like all the field drills we did at SC were always...have to finish five yards. You always have to sprint five yards afterwards. That just gets you entirely into finishing. You know what I mean? Finishing everything you&#39;re doing. When you sprint 5 yards, 10 yards, after every little drill you do, and just focus on that explosion, and like just finishing.<br />

You&#39;ve just got to focus on doing every little thing you can to separate yourself from that next guy. I mean your opponent, whoever it is...</p>

<p>One of the most important defensive football skills to learn is how to avoid offensive blockers.&nbsp; The National Football League&#39;s Donnie Edwards teaches how to best get past a blocker so you can make the tackle.</p>

<p>Transcription:&nbsp;</p>

<p>What I didn&#39;t know when I went to the league, which I wish I would have known in college and in high school, was how to take on blockers. Because I&#39;m not very big. I&#39;m 220, 225 depending, you know what I mean? But the bigger the guys, it&#39;s better for me because he&#39;s gonna be trying to lunge at me and I&#39;m just gonna pop him and get off. And the key about getting off blocks as a linebacker is don&#39;t get tied up with them. Never ever, listen to me. Never ever use your shoulder on alignment or someone that&#39;s trying to block you, except a fullback. Seriously. Because you see, a lot of guys, especially a lot of DBs that don&#39;t understand how to take on blockers, they always come and they&#39;re like this with a shoulder. And that guy&#39;s gonna come, you come with a shoulder? Here, come with a shoulder. Guess what, you ain&#39;t going nowhere. And the key for defenders is making plays.<br />
<br />
If you&#39;re tied up with blockers, you ain&#39;t gonna be on the field because you&#39;re not making plays. But what I leaned from my couch, Gunther Cunningham told me when I was a rookie, how to take on blockers. He talked about having face and hands. Face and hands. Guess what, well what the hell&#39;s that? Face and hands. It&#39;s really like face mask and hands. So it&#39;s almost like a combination of using like your two screws, right here in your helmet, and your hands, and popping and getting off. So when a guy&#39;s coming to block me...so, come to block me. I&#39;m a linebacker, you&#39;re coming to block me. What I do, I hit my face mask and my hands at the same time to get that separation. Because then, when you get that separation, depending on where that ball carrier&#39;s going, boom, you can just get off and you make a play.<br />
<br />
So, depending on which side the blocker&#39;s coming, what I try to do is like, if I&#39;m coming from a linebacker position, and lineman&#39;s come off, the key is like, I have got this A-gap, so if I get cut off by this lineman coming off on me, and I get short here, and I can&#39;t get to my A-gap, all right, you&#39;re screwed. But the key is to get in your A-gap and get separation from that guard coming off on you. So when that guy&#39;s coming off on me, I try to step with the leg that I&#39;m going, face and hands with your face mask, so you get that separation, that little pop&#39;s gonna knock him back and then use your hands to push off and then throw him and get to your gap and then guess what. All you gotta do is make the attack on a hole. It&#39;s really simple but I&#39;m telling you, face and hands will really, really help you make a lot of plays.</p>

Kind of like that acceleration, you know, when you&#39;re down. You&#39;re going, you&#39;re not just here, and then you kind of put it all together. And so, that&#39;s kind of what we&#39;re getting at. So the foot placement is critical. The toe, dorsiflex, make sure we come back all the way, extend the hip and with knees up, drop it hard. So we&#39;re here. Not round, just staying flat. Just like that. So, the first thing we did, so load first. Left knee&#39;s up, okay. Now, let&#39;s go through it slow. So it&#39;s, go, go one, two, three. Good, just like that. Except this is gonna stay flat and get that toe up. Let&#39;s do it full speed now. Get either legs up. Ready, go! Drive chest, go! Chest up, chest up, head up. Ready, go! Good, relax. You know what you do, get your hands on the wall. Right, right, a little bit under your shoulders, good positive angle. So let&#39;s start with a one. I want you to push your butt out, push your butt out. And all we&#39;re gonna do is a load and lift first. All right, on me guys. We&#39;re coming up with the right, the right leg. Ready, go! Toes up, and we&#39;re gonna come back down. So remember guys, your toes are staying up, your back is flat. Ready, go! Good, all right, relax. Ready, and switch! Switch! Switch! Switch! Relax, good. The third phase of this wall acceleration, so, just like Mario did, start here. Player: I mean, it&#39;s funny because that 45 degree launch that he&#39;s talking about is used to get down to the ball, it&#39;s used in a combine because that helps you out with the 40, because the first 10 yards is so crucial. Pretty much that key right there, about getting off, which is basically coming from this wall-push, is very important. Stressing my position.</p>

We&#39;ve already seen the <a href="https://www.weplay.com/youth-football/drills/1431-The-3-Step-Drop-With-Peyton-Manning" rel="nofollow">3-step drop</a>, which is mainly used for short, quick passes. The 5-step drop is traditionally used for longer passes, as it gives more time for the receiver to get down field. Have a look at the master at work.</p>

<p>The follow through is important to throwing a good pass and being accurate. The key is, throwing a football, is you want your hand to finish that way. It&#39;d be kind of like throwing a, I guess a screw ball in baseball. A curve ball, you&#39;re going to finish with your hand that way. In a football throw, you want to throw it and your hand wants to finish that way, and that&#39;s going to result in a spiral. And you really want to avoid it coming all the way across your body.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
It&#39;s going to sometimes but your trying to discipline yourself where it almost comes through to the middle of your body and finishes that way. And that&#39;s usually going to result in a little better spiral. And I really try to finish the throw. I try to come through and finish with my right leg coming forward almost like a pitcher would coming off the mound. It kind of let&#39;s me know that I&#39;m finishing the throw. I&#39;m balanced. I&#39;m following through to the target. All those things, I think will result in an accurate pass.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
There&#39;s nothing wrong when your practicing out there with your receivers on your high school field or on the playground in your back yard with sort of checking yourself after each throw. In other words, after I throw I kind of look at myself. I call it taking a picture of myself. Checking my balance. I&#39;m seeing where I am. I&#39;m seeing where my hand is and the more you do that the better habit you&#39;re going to create. And that way when you get out there in the game on Friday night, on Saturday morning, whenever you&#39;re playing, you&#39;re going to be more accurate as a passer because you worked real hard on developing these mechanics.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Certainly mental preparation is a huge part of it. On game day, a lot of times we&#39;ll be playing at 12:00, so you&#39;ll wake up around 7:30. I think it&#39;s important to get a good night&#39;s sleep the night before. Hopefully you&#39;ve prepared as hard as you possibly could during the week of practice, both mentally and physically, so when you go to bed on Saturday night, or whatever night it is before the game, you can sleep well knowing I&#39;ve done everything I could to get ready for this game. And I wake up feeling pretty comfortable and confident.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
I like to get over the stadium around three and half hours before the game. Get over there, get my ankles taped, get my arms stretched by our trainer, do a little rotator cuff exercises. And then I always go out on the field about two hours before the game to start throwing with my receivers, pick a couple receivers and throw a few routes before the game. But mentally I try to do everything sort of consistently at the same time before each game, so I feel comfortable, I feel confident as we&#39;re getting closer and closer to kickoff, I know sort of what I&#39;m about to get in to, and so once kickoff finally gets here, I feel like I&#39;m ready to go.</p>

<p>First thing we&#39;ll talk about is the grip. I put my fingers on the second lace and the fifth lace. So when that ball is snapped to me from the center, usually my center, Jeff Saturday, snaps it right there every time, but if it comes up different, I will find those laces right away; I try to get my hand on those two laces. I try to have a little bit of space in between the ball and my hand. You don&#39;t want to grip a ball so tight where there&#39;s no space, so you try to have a little bit of space always.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
So that&#39;s where you start and I try to keep the ball up as I&#39;m dropping back and have it above my shoulder, and then I take the ball back, it&#39;s not like throwing a baseball where a baseball you come all the way down here. I try to come straight back and I just think about trying to let the ball just spin off my fingers as I&#39;m throwing it, just letting that ball just spin off and rotate like that and that usually is going to result in a spiral.</p>
