<p>In this youth basketball drill, two offensive players navigate through six defensive players, two per zone and must stay in their zones. The offense must pass to each other to get the ball down court to score. You may make your players run this until they score or switch with each defensive stop or turn over. Shoot and Fake Drill

<p>The jump stop stationary dribble is fast paced basketball drill that will improve a player&#39;s body position, leg strength and coordination. Make sure you are pounding the ball hard and keeping your hand just above your knee, right in front of your toe. As always, keep your head up and your arm bar out. Make sure you have your feet in a wide stance for balance and avoid "duck feet." Perform the drill with your right arm, then turn around and do it with the opposite arm. Jump Stop Stationary Dribble

<p>The fingertip drill, though slightly awkward, is a great tool to help players focus on quick, steady dribbling. In this basketball drill players dribble backwards with their heads up, keeping the basketball very close to the ground. Make sure players keep their arm bar up, and stay on the toes so that they don&#39;t fall over. Remember to work both hands equally by alternating dribbling with the right and left hands.</p>

<p>You know, I talked to Coach McKnight, and we both felt that this is one of the most important drills for young people, especially when you talk about using the cones. You don&#39;t need anybody but yourself. You can set up some cones so you can go in and out as far as working on your ball handling skills. Every time you get to a cone, if you&#39;re dribbling left, then you&#39;re gonna switch it to your right, but you&#39;re gonna exchange very quickly. So let&#39;s take a look at this drill. Here we go.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Quick, oh, quick, quick, quick, good, good, good, good, good. And at the same time, they&#39;re keeping their head up, so in case they have to make a pass or a defender is coming, then they can pick the ball up. Good, good, good, good, good, good, good. Now, we&#39;re gonna keep it going because the same thing they can do, every time you get to a cone, spin, spin, here we go, keep going, keep going. There you go, good, good, spin. See now, you&#39;re working on your quickness again, with your spin move now. Same thing, just using your cone. Basketball Ball Control Cone Drills

<p>In this youth basketball drill, Play Sports TV reviews five significant ball handling moves that are key to master for a successful basketball offense:</p>

<p>In this segment we&#39;re gonna work on ball handling moves. I&#39;ve chosen five moves that we&#39;re gonna work on. The hesitation move, the cross-over move, the inside/out move, a trap dribble, and then a trap dribble with a cross-over. There&#39;s a lot of moves you can work on. I think these are five of the staples that you need to work on as ball handlers. Let&#39;s see the guys do it right now.<br />
<br />
All right, let&#39;s start with righty hesitation. Ready? Go. Eyes Up. Go ahead. Go ahead. Eyes Up. Pound the ball. Make the defender think you&#39;re stopping and then explode by him. Your first step, make it long and explosive. All right, let&#39;s go lefty hesitation. Ian, explosive, that&#39;s not explosive. Hesitate, and blow by him. Low when you hesitate. You&#39;re making the defender think you are stopping. Go ahead. Chop your feet into it. Good. All right, righty cross-over. Righty cross-over. Don&#39;t go so much side-to-side, Ian, step with your right foot and seal. Lefty cross-over. Righty inside/out. Come on, keep the energy up. Lefty inside/out. Good. Eyes up. Really lean like you&#39;re gonna cross over. You want the defender to lean, and then you&#39;re gonna go by him. All right, stop.<br />
<br />
Next drill we&#39;re gonna do is we&#39;re gonna come together. In a game, imagine two players are trying to trap you. They&#39;re pressing or they&#39;re double teaming you. You wanna get away from those two by dribbling it backwards. So you&#39;re gonna go to what we call a trap dribble. You&#39;re going to retreat. Retreat hard. As you retreat, two eyes, your eyes will be up. Both eyes looking for a teammate. Two men are trying to trap you so that leaves you with an advantage down the floor of four of your offensive players against three. So you really wanna try to trap dribble back. Your first option would be to pass over the trap. If people weren&#39;t open, then you&#39;d work on exploding forward and dribbling past the trap. So let&#39;s try that.&nbsp;<br />
Righty trap dribble, go ahead. Push back hard! Push all the way back to where you started from. Two dribbles back hard and then attack forward. Eyes up! Eyes up! Look at your partner. Eyes are up! Push back hard. Imagine two players are trying to trap you. You wanna create space from you and the defenders. Hold up. Now let&#39;s go lefty trap dribble. Ready? Go. Push back. Push back. Eyes up. Look at your partner the whole time. Eyes on your partner. Good. Explode by the trap. Good. Lefty trap dribble. Go ahead. Keep going. One more group and then we&#39;ll switch. Good Shawn and Wes. Good.<br />
<br />
Now we&#39;re gonna go to a righty trap dribble after your two retreat dribbles. We&#39;re gonna turn our body, cross-over, and explode with our left hand. So it&#39;s gonna be righty trap to a cross-over. Ready? Go. Push back, cross the ball over, and go. Turn your body, Shawn. Protect the ball. Push back, turn your body, and explode forward. Again, imagine you&#39;re getting double teamed, they&#39;re trying to take the ball away from you. Turn your body. Position your body in a manner that you protect the ball. Turn and go. Turn your body, protect the ball, and explode forward. Good. Hold up right there.<br />
<br />
So you&#39;ve seen a sample of what I think are the staples of ball handling. I use that at all levels with my younger teams in rec leagues, all the way up to when I&#39;m coaching some college players during the summer. It&#39;s important that you keep that drill moving. Use a time limit or maybe a number of times they do it. Maybe four times each. Maybe each drill 30 seconds. And you&#39;ll get a lot of ball handling in in a short period of time.</p>

Top Five Basketball Ball Handling Moves 


<p>This youth basketball drill will help players develop great ball-handling skills while running down the court. Make sure to emphasize that your players mix up the dribble moves they do (behind the back, between the legs, crossover, spin move), keep the ball under control, dribble with the correct hand, and shoot the lay-up with the correct hand. For more novice players, stick with crossovers and spin-moves. A few repetitions of this basketball drill will really help players improve ball control.</p>

Gauntlet


<p>This is a great basketball drill for younger players that teaches them to keep their heads up and look around the court while dribbling. To execute, have players spread across half of the court and try to knock the basketball away from other players. When a player loses control of the basketball, he or she is eliminated from the game. Also eliminate players who double dribble or travel to stop bad-habits. As a coach, it is smart to allow some bumping during this drill to condition players for game-like situations when a foul may not be called.</p>

Basketball Ball Control Drill: King of the Court 


<p>This basketball drill is a 3-on-3 passing drill. The Corridor Passing Drill focuses on passing, catching, and pivoting with the basketball, as well as getting open and moving without the basketball. It teaches players to create and recognize space and helps with reaction time and defensive footwork and positioning. The goal of this basketball drill is to advance the basketball against pressure without turnovers.</p>

3 - 3 Corridor Passing




<h3><strong>Setup</strong>:</h3>

<p>For this youth basketball drill divide your team into two teams and put them on opposite baselines. Give each player a number.</p>

<h3><strong>Execution</strong>:</h3>

<p>Place a basketball in the middle of the court and call out a number. The player with that number on each side runs to get the ball.</p>

<p>The player that gets the basketball is on offense and tries to score, the player who does not get the ball must try and stop the offensive player from scoring.</p>

<p>Players on the baseline cannot defend the basket, but if the ball comes to them, they can pass it back to their player to keep it in play. Play until one person scores.</p>

<h3><strong>Variations</strong>:</h3>

<ul>
	<li>Call out more than one number as the game progresses.</li>
	<li>Call out shirt colors, hair color, sneaker color, etc.</li>
</ul>

Wall Ball




<h3><strong>Setup</strong>:</h3>

<p>This youth basketball drill or game is more like capture the basketball than capture the flag, but place a basketball on each end of the court. Divide the team up into two teams.</p>

<h3><strong>Execution</strong>:</h3>

<p>If either team captures the basketball, they then play out an offense-defense scenario.</p>

<p>The object of the game is to bring the basketball back to your side of the court and score on your own end.</p>

<p>Once the basketball is on your side, opposing players not in "jail" can try to defend the basket.</p>

Capture the Flag




<p>This is a fun game and basketball drill for beginning basketball players. It works on ball control and dribbling as well as basic defense.</p>

<h3><strong>Setup</strong>:</h3>

<p>Most players on the team (and even some parents or coaches) take a cone and place it on the court. Each player will defend the cone (not standing directly on it).</p>

<h3><strong>Execution</strong>:</h3>

<p>A few of the players with basketballs are sharks. Every time they knock over a cone, they get the minnow.</p>

<p>Play until there are only two minnows left. They are the winners and get to be sharks in the next round.</p>

<h3><strong>Variations</strong>:</h3>

<p>Plays the same as the regular game, except that when a minnow is "eaten," they come back as a shark in the same game, grab a basketball and try to eat more minnows. Last minnow standing is the shark to start the next round.</p>

Sharks and Minnows




<p>The first drill you do at your first practice... Each player begins with a ball and works in one spot before moving with the dribble.</p>

<p><strong>Pitter-Patter</strong>: Have players practice batting the ball in the air from hand to hand using only the tips of their fingers. As they get better at this, have them change elevation of the ball relative to their bodies.</p>

<p><strong>Around the waist</strong>: Have the players warp the ball around their waist from one hand to the other. Then change direction and have them try without looking down at the ball.</p>

<p><strong>Figure 8</strong>: With their legs shoulder width apart, have the players move the ball in a figure 8 pattern around their legs. They are not yet dribbling the ball, just moving it between their legs without it hitting the ground.</p>

<p><strong>Dribble in place</strong>: Show the players the TRIPLE THREAT position - knees slightly bent, back straight, feet forward and shoulder width apart, head up. Have the players dribble in place without moving or losing the ball. Emphasize keeping their heads up and looking at you and using the fingertips. Switch hands.</p>

<p>After a break, move on to these movement drills:</p>

<p><strong>Right/Left Hand dribble</strong>: Have the players dribble with one hand all the way across the court. Switch hands and dribble with the other hand all the way back. To encourage them to keep their heads up, hold a number of fingers above your head and have them call out how many they see.</p>

<p><strong>Crossover Dribble</strong>: Have players dribble to free throw line with one hand, then switch to dribble with their other hand to the free throw line, then switch back to the next free throw line, then again at the far free throw line to the end.</p>

<p><strong>Change of Pace</strong>: Have the players dribble at normal speed, blow the whistle once to dribble on the run, two whistle toots returns to normal pace.</p>

<p><strong>Double Ball Dribble</strong>: Have players dribble two balls at the same time all the way down and back.</p>

There&#39;s a correct way, footwork and balance to close out so you don&#39;t get beat every time. So the first thing, Rip&#39;s the best shooter in basketball. I have to run at him fast. So the first thing I want to do, I want to treat everybody like Rip Hamilton. He throws it, I want to run out fast. I want to run out fast. Now, notice my last two steps. One, two. I slid. I&#39;m not going to continue to run, because if I continue to run, as Rip is a great shooter, and I just continue to run and try to go, he&#39;s going to fake up and go by me. I&#39;m not going to be on balance. So the one thing I want to do now, I want to have a hand up as I run, I want to run and come out in a defensive position. Hand up.<br />

Coach 2: The hand is very important. You see, a lot of guys closing out on shooters such as Rip with their hands at the chest. That is not going to deter a good shooter from shooting the ball. Make sure your hand is extended as high as you can get it to try to alleviate a shot.<br />
<br />
Coach 1: I&#39;m going to give ya&#39;ll all a secret here. There&#39;s no way in the world that I can stop him from getting a jump shot. Only thing I can do is make it contested. Because he already is ahead of me, so I have to realize that I&#39;m just trying to make it contested. If I try to block it, he goes by me. I have to contest the shot. That&#39;s the most important thing. It&#39;s impossible for you to get here to here, but if you contest it and come on balance, it&#39;s a tough shot.<br />

Okay, he&#39;s closing out. Pull. Good. Last two steps you would slide. Running out and then choppy steps, two choppy steps. Okay, next. Let&#39;s go. Let&#39;s get a line.<br />

Like I said, the head is part of your body, and especially in a close-out, you must swing those arms to help get your head to go back over your body to make sure your body&#39;s centered. Rip: Oh, man, it was very important because it&#39;s like you got to be on the chain. You know, everybody got to have each other&#39;s back. I think that&#39;s the one thing we was committed to all year. You know, we figured our defense would lead to easy baskets. We always on the same page, and that&#39;s very important.<br />

Coach Smith: We gonna get Coach Jason to come out with a couple of modern day guys and show us about how to be on that chain, how to be together, and how to help because nobody -- I&#39;m gonna tell you now -- no one can go on a great offensive play by themselves. No one else, so you have to have that.&nbsp;<br />

Coach Jason: Absolutely. What we&#39;re gonna do now is we&#39;re gonna show you a drill. The guys are gonna make you lead, a forward lead, make a pass; and the weak side guy is gonna get to help side and just gonna pass it back and forth. We&#39;re gonna show you how to get from being guarding the ball and getting to the help side position.&nbsp;<br />

One of the most important about defense is...one of the most important things, I should say, is moving when the ball is in moving in the air. And these guys did a good job of moving while the ball was in the air. Positioning themselves, ball you man according to where the offensive player is and the ball is. That&#39;s very important.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Coach Smith: The most important thing I saw is -- and Rick, you can attest to this -- talk.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Rip: Yeah, absolutely.<br />
<br />
Coach Smith: And if you listen, if you&#39;re a good defensive team or good defensive player, you&#39;re going to talk because you&#39;re going to tell the people where they are and they&#39;re not. So that was the first thing I saw was great. And the second thing that I really saw and that you have to pay attention to is the fact that when you are help side, when you got to help somebody out, you cannot be too far over because your man will be able to cut. You can&#39;t be too close because you won&#39;t be able to get...you have to be on what we call one pass away and be able to be able to straddle the line and straddle the basket where you can be on both and be able to help, and at the same time, if the ball comes to your man, being close enough to recover it.<br />

Coach Jason: Correct.<br />

<p>Knowing how to effectively Defend the Post is a critical basketball skill to master. This youth basketball drill video demonstrates the man-you-ball defense and different techniques a defender can employee to make a pass as difficult as possible. As the basketball moves from above the foul line to below the foul line, the defender rotates from a full front position to a from the low side when guarding the offensive player.</p>

<p>This basketball drill works on defending the cutter. Set up your offensive player on the wing, the defender in the center of the key, and the ball out on the 3-point line. The defender wants to have two feet in the lane, and perform what is called the meet and greet. Meet the cutter or flashpost as he "V Cuts" across, and follow using denial defense staying between him and the ball and the basket.</p>

<p>This basketball drill focuses on defending the man one pass away from the basketball. This is a one-on-one drill where the defender is trying to get in the passing lane between the basketball and the offensive player. The defender always wants to stay between the ball and the basket, and between the basket and his man. This is known as the defensive triangle. The offensive player is trying to get open while the defender tries to force the man further outside the basket than he is comfortable.</p>

<p>Transcription:&nbsp;</p>

<p>In this segment, we&#39;re going to talk about defending the man one pass away from the ball. Right now, the ball plays down the foul line and let&#39;s imagine that&#39;s an offensive player who&#39;s trying to pass it to his teammate, Sean, who&#39;s in the orange. Ian is the defender and he&#39;ll be covering Sean and denying Sean the ball. Ian&#39;s basic position, again, is a good stance, feet shoulders width, maybe a little bit wider, his back hand, we make a fist and we kind of bring it in by our shirt.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
We don&#39;t want to hold Sean as he starts to move. Ian&#39;s hand is out in the passing lane. The passing lane, is the ball to Sean, the line between the two. So, Ian&#39;s trying to get up in that passing lane, so our imaginary passer couldn&#39;t snap Sean a pass. So, right now, what we&#39;re going to do is, Sean, just walk down like you&#39;re trying to get open. Ian slide with him. Ian&#39;s going to slide, and what Ian&#39;s going to do is keep a "ball-you-man" relationship, which means he&#39;s going to stay between his man and the basket and he&#39;s going to stay between the ball and his man.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
So, if you were drawing and connecting the dots, from the ball to Ian, to Sean, to the ball, you would have a triangle. And when we talk about defensive triangle, that&#39;s what we&#39;re talking about.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
So, now, Sean, let&#39;s start back out the wing. Ian&#39;s going to slide, not crossing his feet, short steps, trying to stay up in the passing lane. So, a drill we do to introduce this is a slide from the block to the three point line. So, Sean, you step out of bounds, Ian start at the block, and now we imagine an offensive player trying to get up and going from the baseline out to the three point line and back. So, Ian, you&#39;re going to go twice. So slide out, and slide back, and slide out, and slide back.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
All right. Sean, you jump in, same thing, get in to your defensive stance and go. Slide out to the three point line, and slide back, and slide out, and slide back. And let&#39;s stop. Let&#39;s put Ian back on defense. Sean you jump in on offense.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Now, a drill we can use to start to teach this is the coach can take the ball at the foul line, and once you catch it, let&#39;s just freeze at that point. But right now Sean, you&#39;re trying to work from the foul line extended, to the sideline, to the baseline, to the edge of the lane. So, you&#39;re working right in this box to try to get open. Ian you&#39;re always trying to stay between your man and the basket, keep the "ball-you-man" relationship, and defend the pass.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Go ahead, let&#39;s slide. So, good, and back down, keep moving, good and stop, let him catch it, right now, and when he catches it, it goes back to one-on-one defense. The goal is to force your man out and further away from the basket then he&#39;s comfortable on catching it, disrupt the offensive pattern but always staying between your man and the basket, so he doesn&#39;t beat you for a layup. And that&#39;s the introduction to one-on-one defense, one pass away.&nbsp;</p>

One-on-One Defense, One Pass Away Drill


<p>This basketball drill is fantastic for teaching the fundamentals of on-ball defense and communication. Remember to emphasize that players are communicating effectively by being loud, taking into consideration that in game situations the crowd will be noisy. There are a number of variations to this drill, and major college basketball programs and pro teams still practice it.</p>

<h3><strong>Purpose:</strong></h3>

<p>To teach proper defensive position and technique. Also, this helps players work on the ball control drills. Finally, with dribblers running the length of the court and defenders constantly moving, this is a great conditioning drill as well.</p>

<h3><strong>How it Works:</strong></h3>

<p>Three players set-up on the opposite foul line. One player is in the middle of the foul line the other two players are on either side on the foul line extended. Three more players set-up on the half court line spaced the same way. Depending on the number of players on the team, one to three players set-up on the nearest foul line.</p>

<p>Three more players are under the basket with basketballs.</p>

<p>When the coach blows the whistle the first player begins dribbling through the defenders. Once the first dribbler gets past the first line of defenders, the coach blows the whistle and then the second player goes. When the second player gets past the first set of defenders the coach blows the whistle and the last dribbler begins.</p>

<p>The dribbler tries to make it all the way to the other end without picking up his dribble or losing the ball. The defenders try to stop the dribbler and/or steal the ball without fouling.</p>

<h3><strong>Coaching Points:</strong></h3>

<p>The defense needs to try to funnel the dribbler to the sideline where an effective trap can be applied. The defense needs to move their feet and work together to try to trap and/or steal the ball. The dribbler needs to keep his eyes up and use the crossover dribble to stay out of the trap.</p>

The Gauntlet Defensive Drill


<p>A solid defensive drill for teaching the fundamentals of footwork, body positioning and movement to younger players.</p>

<p>Everyone lines up on the baseline.</p>

<p>Players sprint out to the free throw line, where they come to a stop, put their hands up as if to defend a shot or pass.</p>

<p>After a 1-second pause, they slide facing forward without letting their feet cross along the free throw line extended to the sidelines. (half go left, half go right)</p>

<p>Once each player gets to the sideline, they sprint along the sideline to the half court line. Stop and put your hands up in a defensive position.</p>

<p>Pause and begin shuffling back across the half court line to the center circle at mid-court, then sprint to the free throw line.</p>

<p>Stop at the free throw line, put your hands up in the stopped defensive position, then shuffle back to the sidelines and continue this until each player arrives at place across from where they began on the far baseline.</p>

Now in this thing, Mike Garrity is going to really over-exaggerate coming over the top of the screen. He&#39;s probably looking for a steal and going down the other way for a layup. But obviously he&#39;s not going to get it. We&#39;re going to work on the back-door cut now. Why don&#39;t we get right in to that?&nbsp;<br />

Coach 2: Same thing. I know he&#39;s coming up. Layup. Shane, one more time. Let&#39;s do that one more time. So he&#39;s up, point guard has the ball over his head, boom, back-door, boom. Everything looks exactly the same coming up before as it did when you flared.&nbsp;Because if you come up, Mike, guard him again. If you guard him again, he comes up, it looks exactly the same. All of a sudden it&#39;s not the flare and he cut back-door. So everything looks exactly the same no matter what you do. And that&#39;s the deception that he has.&nbsp;</p>

Backdoor Cut Drill


<p>This basketball drill is designed to teach your post players the art of the turnaround jump shot. Continually emphasize that your players receive the ball, square up to the basket, and then shoot, using the backboard if possible. Also remember to go after the rebound aggressively. If you want to make this basketball drill more challenging, put a stationary post defender on the ball, this will force the post player to shoot over someone and replicate a game-like situation.</p>

Basic Motion Play




<p>Setting proper screens can start at an early level and is invaluable for helping offensive players create space, get open and score more easily.</p>

<p>With this youth basketball drill, teach your players that it is important to wait for the screening teammate to set, move toward the screen, cut off the screener and make it hard for the player that is screened out to chase.</p>

<h3><strong>Setup</strong>:</h3>

<p>Have the player with the basketball stand at the top of the key guarded by a coach. Put all of the other players in a line off to one side.</p>

<h3><strong>Execution</strong>:</h3>

<p>The first player in line comes and sets a screen on the coach as the player with the basketball rolls to the basket.</p>

Basketball Screening Drill for Beginners 


<p>The motion offense is a generic term for any offense that uses court movement, cuts to the ball or the basket, and good screen setting.</p>

<p>The one thing that separates the Motion offense from others is that it is quite flexible you don&#39;t have to have set plays every time you bring the ball down the court.</p>

<p>Instead, the Motion Offense is focused on teaching players to use a basic set of rules for their movements, and then to react to what is being done defensively on the court. With the variation in defense, the motion offense has a variety of looks and several different options available. We&#39;ll take a look at the basic 3 out 2 in offense. The other variations of this offense are:<br />
The 4 out 1 in<br />
The 5 out<br />
The 1-3-1<br />
The 1-4<br />
... and in each of those there are variations.</p>

<h3><strong>3 out 2 in</strong></h3>

<p>This is a basic motion offense that you could see at any high school or even college level game. It will most often utilize one strong, ball handling point guard, 2 wings (on the perimeter) and 2 post players. In the motion offense, you usually play to your skills and design your motion offense plays based on those strengths. It can be run against a zone defense, or a man -to- man.</p>

<p>Here are a few basic rules of thumb for the motion offense:<br />
The point guard always bring the ball up because the offense is set off their direction. The point guard is always the last line of defense against the fast break and does not rebound (unless he or she drives the lane).<br />
The perimeter forward need to be versatile players that can either drive the lane, set screens and be quick enough to find the open areas of the court. They also need to be ball-smart so they can read what a defender is doing and react according to the basic concepts of the motion offense.<br />
The post players need to be agile enough to set screens and cut to the hoop off of a pick and roll, and tough enough to grind it out on the boards against some of the toughest man -to- man and zone defenses.<br />
This is more of a concept offense than a &#39;set play&#39; offense. Once the players know how to read and react to an opposing defense, then a coach can design set plays based on the defensive alignment of his opposition.<br />
The key to this offense being successful is balance and spacing. Too much crowding keeps the shooting lanes and driving lanes closed. Passes are easily intercepted and screens are ineffective.</p>

<h3><strong>Basic 3 out-2 in Alignment</strong></h3>

<p>These are the options that the players in the motion offense have. Dribbling is usually not an option unless a player is in trouble (because of a double team or trap), to open a passing or driving lane, or if they are in danger of having a 5 second violation.</p>

<p>Otherwise, it is pass, screen, drive or cut to the hole. The 1 man (point guard) brings the ball up the court and has one of four options:<br />
Drive to the hoop<br />
Pass to the 2 or 3 man<br />
Pass to the post<br />
Wait for a screen and run the offense from the corner of the perimeter</p>

<p>So, looking Figure 1 you will see that with the basic 3 out 2 in motion offense you have plenty of options:<br />
The 1 man can pass to the 2 or 3 man on the outside, or as they are cutting to the hoop; either over the top of their defender, or back door. If the point guard passes it wide to the 2 or 3 man, he or she can cut through the key for a return pass.<br />
The 1 man can pass to the high post coming to the top of the key, or use the high post as a decoy to hit the back door cutter. If the guard hits the post with a pass, the wing can still cut back door and get a pass from the high post.<br />
The point guard can drive to the hoop on a screen from the wing, or use the screen to run the offense from the wing.<br />
The one post player can set a screen and the other can go back door or over the top (based on the defense) to get a pass from the point guard.</p>

<p>This is just the first step of the offense done from the point guard position. Even though the diagram shows only one side, you can mirror the image and run the same offense on the other side.</p>

<p>Also, with each pass around the perimeter you can set the offense from that point. The great thing about this offense is that it can be adapted to whatever defense is being run against you.</p>

<p>Also, it is open to many different options at the coaches&#39; and players&#39; discretion.</p>

<h3><strong>Keys to the Motion Offense</strong></h3>

<p>Don&#39;t dribble unless you have to. It is a passing and moving offense. Each pass should be followed by a triple threat position.<br />
Your players need to learn to read and recognize where there are openings in a defense and then exploit them. Once they understand the different options they have this offense can be quite successful.<br />
A good ball control and passing point guard is essential they set the offense and make the first pass.</p>

<p>The motion offense is just that full of motion. With each pass that is made, the players react to where the ball is going, and look for an opening to make a play. Once the wing gets the ball, they can pass to the post; when the post gets the ball it can pass to the back door cutting wing, etc.</p>

<h2>16 Tips for Running Effective Basketball Plays</h2>

<h3><strong>Tip #1 - Stress execution</strong></h3>

<p>The reason that set plays work so well is that you have the opportunity to practice them ahead of time. However, if you don&#39;t stress execution and make sure your players are doing things correctly, then your plays will be lack luster.</p>

<p>You&#39;ll need to make sure that your players are setting solid screens, rubbing off screens shoulder to shoulder, setting up their man before the screen, cutting quickly to the basket, and so on.</p>

<h3><strong>Tip #2 - Stress concentration</strong></h3>

<p>Again, the reason set plays can be effective is because they can be practiced and executed to near perfection. This means your players really need to concentrate to run it correctly. The concentration starts in your practices and continues into games.</p>

<h3><strong>Tip #3 - Make sure players know their roles</strong></h3>

<p>If the key to a certain play is to have a screener that jab steps to set up their man and set a solid back screen, make sure they know their job. It takes five players all working together to make the play successful.</p>

<p>As always, communicating with your players and letting them know their roles makes you more successful. This gets your players to take ownership, feel more involved, and improve the execution of your plays.</p>

<h3><strong>Tip #4 - Timing</strong></h3>

<p>Timing is critical in order to run plays effectively. It can also be one of the trickiest things for coaches and players to master.</p>

<p>If your screener leaves too early, then your shooter will be open before the ball gets to them. And by the times the ball arrives, the defense has already recovered and the open shot is gone!</p>

<p>You&#39;ll need to constantly monitor and be aware of your timing.</p>

<h3><strong>Tip #5 - Practice</strong></h3>

<p>The recurring theme to all these tips revolves around practice. Practice is where points are scored. You should continually practice and refine your plays so your players know their roles, fundamentals, and everything so they can run the play in their sleep. Repetition, repetition, repetition!</p>

<h3><strong>Tip #6 - Run your plays for the right people</strong></h3>

<p>Great coaches get the ball in the hands of the players at the right time so they can succeed. At the end of the game, you might want to get the ball in the hands of your best player. Or perhaps you&#39;ll want to position your players on their favorite side of the floor. Bottom line, your plays have to fit your players.</p>

<h3><strong>Tip #7 - Maintain good spacing</strong></h3>

<p>Plenty of spacing between your players is important because it keeps the defense honest and spread out -- so your offense has more room to cut and drive to the basket.</p>

<p>It&#39;s much easier to play good defense against a team that has their players bunched together because there&#39;s less ground to cover.</p>

<p>That&#39;s why almost all the successful coaches stress good spacing. Not only does it give you more scoring opportunities, but it prevents defenses from easily trapping your team.</p>

<h3><strong>Tip #8 - Design your plays to flow into the offense</strong></h3>

<p>In a perfect world, all your plays finish in the same formation of your primary offense. This allows you to immediately flow into your offense without hesitating. This means the defense doesn&#39;t have a chance to recover and can also reduce your team&#39;s turnovers (because they won&#39;t have to scramble to reset the offense).</p>

<h3><strong>Tip #9 - Put your players in good position to get the rebound</strong></h3>

<p>Coaches often overlook offensive rebounding when designing plays and this could increase your scoring significantly. Can you get a second or third shot if a miss occurs? Where are your best rebounders located when the shot is taken?</p>

<p>Make sure to position your players appropriately to set them up for success. If a particular play does not provide you with good rebounding position, you might want to re-evaluate the play.</p>

<h3><strong>Tip #10 - Teach players to react to the defense</strong></h3>

<p>Even though you want your players to know all the plays, you never want them to become mechanical within the plays. When defenses overplay a pass, the player should recognize this and execute a back-door cut.</p>

<p>Teaching your players how to read the defense and react does take time, but it&#39;s time well spent! This pays off late in the season and in the playoffs. Almost all good teams will play this style in the playoffs and into championship games because no coach in his right mind is going to let you get into your set plays.</p>

<p>Why not teach from day one how to make proper cuts and screens based on how the defense is playing? That will make your plays even more difficult to defend.</p>

<h3><strong>Tip #11 - Teach the fundamentals</strong></h3>

<p>No matter what type of offense or plays you use, you must teach your players the fundamentals.</p>

<p>To get the most from your team, you should teach and emphasize the basics of passing, cutting, screening, setting up the defender, reading the defense, and so on.</p>

<p>This is before you even begin running your plays. They need to know how to dribble and shoot. They need to understand how to do a pivot. They need to understand when to do a back-door cut versus a v-cut. They need to understand when to slip a screen on a screen and roll.</p>

<p>It doesn&#39;t matter what level of play you are at, you cannot get away from the basics.</p>

<h3><strong>Tip #12 - Have big players screen for smaller guards</strong></h3>

<p>If the defense chooses to switch on screens, then this creates mismatches and problems for the defense. You can clear out the lane for your post player or you could clear a wing so your guard can take the bigger, slower post player to the basket. Make sure to try this during scrimmages and practices to make sure your players recognize the switches and mismatches.</p>

<h3><strong>Tip #13 - Make sure the help side defense is occupied</strong></h3>

<p>Whether you&#39;re using one of our plays or designing your own, be sure that the help side of the defense is occupied. What&#39;s happening away from the ball? Are your players standing or moving to keep their defenders out of the play?</p>

<p>Some players don&#39;t take their part seriously because the ball is away from them. But they need to know their role is just as important, even though they are simply a decoy to keep the defense occupied. As a coach, be sure to keep an eye this.</p>

<h3><strong>Tip #14 - Make sure you get the type of shot you want</strong></h3>

<p>Your plays should always have a purpose and don&#39;t let yourself or your players lose sight. Do you want a lay up out of the inbounds? Do you want to get to the free throw line? Do you want a quick post up?</p>

<p>Sometimes it&#39;s really easy for players to force things because they anticipate a certain shot will be open. So be sure your players understand the type of shot you want.</p>

<h3><strong>Tip #15 - Run plays from the same initial set</strong></h3>

<p>You should use plays that run off your initial offensive sets. For example, if you run a 1-2-2 set, you should use this same set with your plays. It provides simplicity for the players and the defense gets confused more easily.</p>

<p>If the defense knows that you run a certain play out of a certain set, they&#39;ll know what to look for. If your plays occur in the same set, they won&#39;t know what play comes next.</p>

<h3><strong>Tip #16 - Have visual and verbal cues to let your team know which play to run</strong></h3>

<p>It&#39;s best to have both verbal and visual cues for your players so you can make sure your players get the message. There&#39;s nothing worse than having four players run the play to perfection and one guy has no idea what&#39;s happening.</p>

<p>Sometimes the crowd is noisy and your players can&#39;t hear you. And other times your players have their back to you. So have both types of cues ready for any situation.</p>

<p>This offensive basketball play works well for youth basketball teams of all ages and skill levels. When the defense is overplaying the passing lanes, the wing player can fake out his defender for an open layup by cutting behind him, otherwise called "backdoor". It&#39;s key to create enough space on the wing and around the basket so the help defense is too far away to recover.</p>

Offensive Zone Breaker Play: &#8220;Smash&#8221;

<h3><strong>Setup</strong>:</h3>
<p>This youth basketball drill or game is more like capture the basketball than capture the flag, but place a basketball on each end of the court. Divide the team up into two teams.</p>
<h3><strong>Execution</strong>:</h3>
<p>If either team captures the basketball, they then play out an offense-defense scenario.</p>
<p>The object of the game is to bring the basketball back to your side of the court and score on your own end.</p>
<p>Once the basketball is on your side, opposing players not in "jail" can try to defend the basket.</p>
