When Explaining Coronavirus To Your Children, What’s The Best Approach?

Dr. Angela N. Baldwin and Dr. Melanie R. Graber breaks down the best way to explain the new COVID-19 to your children.

First, it’s important to remember that there’s no evidence that children are more susceptible to COVID-19. Most cases have involved adults, and the few cases that have involved children have produced milder symptoms.

Here are a few key pieces of advice when explaining Coronavirus to your children:

  • Evaluate the situation — see how much they already know and how it makes them feel
  • Be open and available for questions, allow expression of feelings and how to cope
  • Remind your children to wash their hands properly, scrubbing for 20 seconds with warm water and soap
  • Know resources and where to get help. This can be very stressful
