Help Make Youth Sports More Affordable By Supporting The PHIT Act

The cost of youth sports is one of the largest barriers to participation for youth today. According to the Aspen Institute, the average annual cost for participants in youth sports is almost $900. Earlier this year, TeamSnap launched TeamSnap Impact to directly address issues like this in youth sport. One key component of TeamSnap Impact is to provide support in building and influencing policy that shapes the future of youth sports. The first major initiative in policy is to support a bill currently being reviewed in Congress, the Personal Health Investment Today (PHIT) Act. The PHIT Act would allow flexible spending accounts (FSAs) and health savings accounts (HSAs) to pay for youth sports fees, sports and exercise equipment, health club memberships, fitness classes, and outdoor recreation. The ability for individuals to use these pre-tax dollars to pay for sport and fitness related expenses has the potential to save participants over 20%.

The PHIT Act will enable individuals to use up to $1,000 per year – up to $2,000 for families – to cover physical activity-related expenses. Money placed in pre-tax accounts such as HSAs, FSAs & HRAs, which was previously only allowed to be used for various health and medical needs, would now be expanded to cover the cost of youth sports.

If you would like to show your support for this bill that would change the game for youth sports,  please send a message to Congress today using this link. Simply plug in your name and address, select the tweet (or e-mail message) and hit send. Your message will be automatically delivered to your Representatives in Washington.

Let’s help get the PHIT Act across the finish line!
